Exhibitions Coordinator/Facilities Manager

Supervisor: Report to Gallery Director.

Summary

This staff position is responsible for the daily coordination of exhibitions and programs at the Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon, including all aspects of installation and preparation. Manages 9,000 square foot, three-story gallery facility, capital equipment and other inventories. Coordinates university personnel, outside contractors and vendors for the maintenance and upgrade of facilities, equipment and inventories, and de-/installation of exhibits. Supervises and works closely with all exhibiting artists, guest lecturers, and performers. Directs all student assistants, interns and volunteers in their various roles. Responsible for the care and security of artwork. Assists Director to ensure smooth operations of exhibitions. Requires extensive knowledge of art gallery operations and facilities management, and knowledge of university policies, marketing, and financial accounting. At the discretion of the Director may assist with or collaborate on research, coordination, and exhibition design of the gallery's three to six contemporary art and traveling exhibitions per year, two annual student exhibitions, and any associated outreach and educational programs such as workshops, lectures, conferences, symposia, screenings, live art/performances, and music events.

 

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor of (Fine) Arts or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience. Driver's License. Three or more years working professionally as an art handler and/or registrar. Considerable experience in exhibit fabrication and installation. Facilities management experience. Supervisory and managerial experience. Extensive knowledge of art gallery operations and contemporary art field. Broad understanding of art exhibition practices including the use of innovative technologies. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with creative individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Experience with design, printing, and mailing practices. Knowledge of registration methods, crating, shipping and insuring art domestically and internationally. Familiarity with U.S. customs and copyright issues and laws. Ability to handle art professionally and with archival issues in mind. Budgeting and accounting skills.

 

Preferences

Masters in arts related field. Forklift operator. Experience in an academic setting or gallery/art museum setting. Experience in event planning and/or community organization. Grant writing experience. Ability to drive 24' truck safely. Ability to troubleshoot and coordinate repair of all audio-visual equipment, flat screen tvs, computers, DLP projectors, parabolic speakers, etc. Web design and maintenance skills using DreamWeaver; graphics packages such as InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Filemaker Pro. Familiarity with regional arts and cultural communities. Interest in community building.

Supervisor: Report to Exhibitions Coordinator.

Job includes
Art handling with the safety and archival preservation of the artwork in mind. Designing/fabricating exhibition props, furniture. Installing and de-installing exhibitions. Performing gallery maintenance. Painting walls, pedestals and cases for new installations. Keeping tool room organized and safe. Operating and trouble-shooting audio-visual equipment, DLP projectors, computers, bucket-lift and other equipment. Other duties as assigned.

Desired skills
Technical (CAD/DXF, CNC router operation, A/V, video editing, proficiency with Adobe CS2/3 Mac and PC, extensive knowledge of computer operation, basic digital photography). Construction (basic carpentry, building projection rooms, walls and pedestals). Proficiency with power tools (table saw, chop saw, framing saw, etc.). Comfort using ladders and bucket lift, working at 20 ft. height. Basic familiarity with electrical circuits, welding and metalwork, mold-making and casting. Organizational (experience in gallery setting, art handling, making labels and mounts). Ability to work as part of a team.

Necessary skills
Heavy lifting (as much as 50 lbs. at a time). Good communication and positive attitude in learning and performing duties listed above.

Previous art gallery experience.

Marketing/Communications Assistant

Supervisor. Report to Exhibitions Coordinator and assist Graphics/Office Coordinator.

Job include. Website, Facebook, MySpace updates, HTML code. Posting flyers and distributing invitations on campus and around the city of Pittsburgh. Creation and maintenance of gallery archive files, creating CD backups of previous exhibitions photos and designs. Updating paper and electronic mailing lists. Marketing research, including compiling survey results, processing and mailing catalogue purchases. Digital photo documentation of receptions and exhibitions. Working openings and special events (help with set up and clean up, wash dishes, sweep floors, take out trash). Opening and closing the gallery, securing gallery with alarm system. Interacting with the public, artists, curators, using good judgment in difficult social situations. Running errands. performing office tasks and other duties as assigned.

Desired skills.

Technical (web-design and web maintenance skills, familiarity with Dreamweaver, FileMaker Pro, DVD Studio-Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, digital photography experience, Word, Excel, proficient with both Mac and PC). Organizational (experience in gallery setting) and administrative (experience interacting with the public, working well as part of a team). Strong interest in social networking, Marketing, and Marketing Research (Constant Contact or Survey Monkey experience).

ABOUT THE MILLER GALLERY AT CARNEGIE MELLON

The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon has sought to support the creation, understanding, and growth of contemporary art through exhibitions, projects, events and publications since January 2000.

The 9,000 square foot space functions as a showcase for experimentation, examination, discovery, and discussion. The gallery aspires to engage diverse audiences, to create and strengthen communities through art, and to stimulate, provoke, and encourage contemplation of the visual arts of our times.

Over the last eight years, the Miller Gallery has exhibited work by Laylah Ali, Janine Antoni, The Art Guys, Michael Bevilacqua, Enrique Chagoya, Catherine Chalmers, Michael Ray Charles, Minerva Cuevas, Nicole Eisenman, Inka Essenhigh, Neil Farber, Karen Finley, Rachel Harrison, Arturo Herrera, Tran T. Kim-Trang, Glenn Ligon, Kerry James Marshall, Larry Miller, Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Shirin Neshat, Christy Rupp, Al Souza, Sarah Sze, TermiteTV, Kara Walker, Olav Westphalen, Gail Wight, and Sue Williams. Notable Carnegie Mellon School of Art alumi including Mel Bochner, Jacob Ciocci (Paper Rad), Peter Coffin, John Currin, Cassandra C. Jones, Shana Moulton, and Fereshteh Toosi have also exhibited here.

The Miller Gallery is a non-collecting, public art gallery located in the Purnell Center for the Arts on Forbes Avenue, on the campus of Carnegie Mellon in Oakland/Shady Side, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is a unit of the College of Fine Arts, and is named for Regina Gouger Miller, avid art collector, alumna of the School of Art, and principal donor.
