Since January 2000, the Miller Gallery has sought to support the creation,
growth, and understanding of contemporary art through exhibitions, projects,
events and publications. A non-collecting facility located in the Purnell
Center for the Arts on the main campus of Carnegie Mellon, the Gallery
is named for Regina Gouger Miller, alumna of the School of Art, avid art
collector, and generous principal donor. The 9,000 square foot space functions
less as a showroom for art, than one for experimentation, examination,
discovery and discussion. The gallery aspires to engage diverse audiences,
as well as to stimulate, provoke and encourage contemplation of the visual
arts of our times.

Regina Gouger Miller Gallery
Carnegie Mellon’s Miller Gallery Holds Largest
Exhibition
Of Quilt Artist Nancy Crow’s Work, June 12—Aug. 15
PITTSBURGH—The Regina Gouger Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University
presents “Nancy
Crow: Works from 1988–2008,” featuring more than 50 quilts that make
it the largest exhibition ever of Crow’s
work. Former Miller Gallery Director Petra Fallaux curates the summer exhibition,
which opens with a reception
from 5 to 8 p.m., June 12, and runs through Aug. 15.
At 7 p.m., June 11, Crow will lecture and sign copies of her books in McConomy
Auditorium in the
University Center.
Rather than assembling a “greatest hits” compilation or a chronological
survey of Crow’s career,“Nancy Crow: Works from 1988–2008” presents the works with
an eye toward uncovering the artist’s process of
discovery in these pivotal years. The exhibition includes examples of her quilts “Bow
Tie,” “Chinese Souls” and
from her “Linear Studies” series, as well as more than 30 works from
the “Color Blocks” and “Constructions”
series. In addition, a half-dozen new quilts will be unveiled at the exhibition.
Since 1988, Crow has experimented with innovative approaches that push her work
well beyond the
craft’s traditional boundaries, particularly in the areas of color and
composition. By exclusively mixing her own
dyes and applying them in multiple applications, Crow brings out the utmost intensities
and subtleties in color
values and hues. Having mastered the art of free cutting, she achieved a compositional
freedom that makes new
constructions with dazzling lyrical lines and authentic shapes possible.
Much like a great improvisational jazz musician who puts his or her own spin
on a song’s phrasing,
Crow has applied her unique perspective to develop a novel vocabulary of quiltmaking.
The artist’s honesty and
unwavering dedication to her art make her one of the most authoritative and genuine
voices in contemporary art
today.
The Miller Gallery is located in the Purnell Center for
the Arts on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. The
gallery, free and open to the public, is open from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday
through Sunday. Visit
